Welcome
Porridge’s Place is a small modern air-conditioned studio apartment
recently constructed below the upper floor apartment
occupied by Derrick Lopez (a.k.a. Porridge) and his partner Jeanell and their two children Shaquille and Derricia.

Porridge is a well known person both in the village
of Castara and in Tobago generally. He has a successful
car and jeep hire business and also a minibus service
for meeting visitors at the airport and for island
trips. He is a friendly and warm hearted person who has
a very good reputation with tourists for offering a
responsive and well organised service that includes
excellent introduction to local Caribbean life.
Porridge and Jeanell manage, for other people, three
holiday accommodations in Castara and are very
experienced in looking after visitors. They have
recently extended their home to create a studio
apartment that offers a very good standard of
accommodation for a modest charge.

Quietly located on the eastern edge of the village
the apartment looks across open rural landscape dotted
with local homes and has a distant view of the ocean.
Castara beach is a 2 minute drive or a 10 minute walk
down the hill and the famous Englishman’s Bay is a 5
minute drive or 30 minute walk in the opposite
direction.
Castara village is on the western, Caribbean coast
and is a 45 minute drive from the airport. It is a small
and delightful fishing village, recently reviewed in The
Telegraph as the place to visit for an authentic local
Caribbean experience. The village is situated on the
edge of the rainforest and there is an excellent
walk that starts at Porridge’s front door and
offers a clearly marked trail through the rainforest.
The two beaches in Castara are generally recognised
as one of the prettiest beach locations in Tobago (many
would claim it as the best) with very good snorkelling
over the coral reef off the Little Beach, and lots of
space to relax either in sun or shade, on both the big
and little beaches.
If you are booking for good quality budget
accommodation with friendly hosts and a quiet location
the Porridge’s Place may be just the place for you.
